San Antonio Mayoral Race – Is It Truly Partisan & Why Does it Matter?

By Tim Westley, Ph.D.

The San Antonio mayoral race is not just another political contest—it’s a defining moment for the city’s future. While officially a nonpartisan election, the underlying political ideologies of the candidates cannot—and should not—be ignored. Recent discussions on the "Beyond the Bite" podcast between political consultants Eddie Aldrete, James Aldrete, and Kelton Morgan made it clear: despite the nonpartisan label, mayoral candidates must take strong, defined positions on key issues.

James Aldrete stated, "To think you're going to be a mayoral candidate and not take positions on that is fairly naive." Kelton Morgan added, "It’s a nonpartisan election, but it’s not a nonpartisan election." These insights from experienced consultants emphasize a crucial point: voters deserve to know exactly where candidates stand, especially when it comes to the core values that will shape the future of San Antonio.

Currently, 15 candidates have officially entered the race by filing Campaign Treasurer Appointments with the City of San Antonio. Of these, the majority lean Democratic, reflecting the city’s historically blue political landscape. However, three candidates proudly align with the Republican Party: Rolando Pablos, Clayton Perry, and Dr. Tim Westley.

Pablos, a former Republican who now identifies as independent, represents a shift in political positioning that some may choose to gain a political edge. While positioning oneself as independent might seem politically strategic, it is Dr. Tim Westley who has chosen to stand firm with his conservative values. Dr. Westley has made it clear that he proudly identifies as a Republican, embracing his party affiliation and the values that come with it.

Why Does Partisan Affiliation Matter?

Ultimately, how a candidate identifies will have an impact on how they serve?  The principal believes and values will impact and shape how they influence, lead and represent the city, locally and around the nation, as the lead ambassador for San Antonio. Consider some of the differences when large cities, such as San Antonio have Republican or Democrats at the helm.

The differences in crime rates, economic performance, employment, and homelessness between Democrat- and Republican-led cities stem from distinct policies, priorities, and historical contexts. Below is a comparison based on prevailing trends:

  • Crime
    • Democrat-led Cities: Larger cities with Democratic leadership often struggle with rising crime, particularly violent and property crimes.
    • Republican-led Cities: Republican-led cities tend to prioritize stronger law enforcement and tougher crime policies, which can result in lower crime rates in some areas, though they may not always address the underlying causes of crime.
  • Economy
    • Democrat-led Cities: These cities focus on social services, higher taxes to fund public services, and environmental sustainability. Critics argue that high taxes and regulations may drive businesses and residents away. Overall, they may face budget deficits due to high spending on social programs, which can hinder overall economic growth.
    • Republican-led Cities: Republican-led cities emphasize creating business-friendly environments, which often results in growth in sectors like technology, manufacturing, and retail. They often prioritize low taxes and minimal regulations to attract businesses.
  • Employment
    • Democrat-led Cities: While these cities tend to have higher job creation in the service, healthcare, and tech sectors, they may also experience higher unemployment rates due to the concentration of industries requiring higher education or specialized skills.
    • Republican-led Cities: Republican-led cities often see higher employment rates, bolstered by business-friendly policies and a focus on energy, manufacturing, and retail sectors.
  • Homelessness
    • Democrat-led Cities: Homelessness is often more visible in Democrat-led cities, which typically adopt progressive approaches to social services and emphasize transparency on the issue.
    • Republican-led Cities: While Republican-led cities also face homelessness, they often implement stricter policies focused on shelters and temporary solutions, rather than long-term affordable housing initiatives.  They emphasize private sector involvement in addressing homelessness.

Political identification is not just a label—it reflects the principles that guide a candidate’s decisions and leadership. Dr. Westley firmly believes that standing with Republican values is essential for the future of San Antonio. He is committed to promoting lower taxes, supporting free-market capitalism, advocating for deregulation of businesses, and prioritizing economic development. These principles will benefit all families in San Antonio by fostering a thriving economy, creating more job opportunities, and reducing the financial burden on residents.

At the heart of Dr. Westley’s leadership is a belief in values that transcend party lines. Faith, family, and freedom remain core to the San Antonio way of life, regardless of political affiliation. These are values that have long been part of the fabric of this city, and Dr. Westley is committed to standing firm on them as he leads San Antonio forward. He understands that they are not only vital to the community’s cultural identity but also essential to its overall well-being and success.

Conclusion

As San Antonio prepares to choose its next mayor, the importance of political identity and alignment with core values is more evident than ever. One of his mantras is “From the People – For the People”!  So, regardless of political affiliation or geographic location, he plans to be the mayor for ‘ALL’ of San Antonio, not just parts or subgroups. Dr. Tim Westley offers voters a strong, principled choice—one grounded in values that prioritize economic growth, safety, and community.  His vision for San Antonio is clear, and his commitment to these values will guide the city to greater success and prosperity.
