From the Outside In: Dr. Tim Westley’s Fresh Perspective vs. Mayor Nirenberg’s Inner Circle and the Status Quo
San Antonio stands at a crossroads, and the choice we make today will shape the future of our city for generations to come. I’m Dr. Tim Westley, an outside candidate for mayor, and I believe San Antonio deserves leadership that is committed to ensuring every corner of our city—East, West, North, and South—is uplifted and given a fair chance to thrive. While outgoing Mayor Ron Nirenberg has made strides in economic development and infrastructure, the question remains: Who truly benefits from these efforts?
In response to Andrea Drusch’s September 12, 2024 article, “For All Their Disagreements, Nirenberg Says Council Colleagues Are Well-Poised to Succeed Him,” Mayor Nirenberg has expressed his preference for a successor from within his circle, stating, “All of the colleagues that I know that are running right now are part of the decision-making and the record that we’ve put in place…which is making a significant generational difference in San Antonio. I think they have an advantage because they can own that record” (San Antonio Current, 2024). But is that record something to be proud of for all San Antonians? I don’t think so, and neither do the countless residents who feel left behind. It’s time for a leader who isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo and bring the necessary changes that our city needs.
Economic Development and Equity: A Tale of Two Cities
Under Mayor Nirenberg’s leadership, San Antonio has seen economic growth, but this progress has not been equitably distributed. Despite initiatives aimed at revitalizing the East Side, the area still lags behind in terms of investment and opportunity. The East Side Promise Zone, a federally designated area intended to attract investment, has not lived up to its potential. “It feels like we’re always promised development that never comes,” lamented a community leader (San Antonio Express-News, 2019). The story is no different on the West Side, where despite the city’s overall economic boom, neighborhoods remain economically challenged. “The West Side has been left out,” said State Representative Diego Bernal (Texas Public Radio, 2020).
Infrastructure Shortcomings: Neglected Neighborhoods
San Antonio’s infrastructure woes are well-known and widely felt, especially on the East, West, and South sides of the city. Potholes and poorly maintained roads have become a daily struggle for many residents. In 2023, KSAT News highlighted the frustrations of citizens dodging potholes and dealing with vehicle damage. “It’s like the city is ignoring basic maintenance,” one resident said. While downtown and North Side neighborhoods enjoy significant infrastructure upgrades (which we must maintain), other areas are left with crumbling roads and inadequate services—a reality I am determined to change.
Flood control and drainage issues are also a pressing concern. Severe weather events have repeatedly exposed the city’s lack of preparedness, with some neighborhoods facing frequent flooding. Residents have been asking for better drainage for years, only to be met with slow action and empty promises.
A Vision for All of San Antonio
I’m not a career politician. I’m an outsider who has served this city in various capacities since 1996, when I first arrived in San Antonio as a U.S. Army serviceman at Ft. Sam Houston. For nearly 30 years, I’ve witnessed the challenges and triumphs of this city firsthand. I believe that all of San Antonio should be treated fairly, regardless of where you live. I aim to hear the voices of all residents, especially those in neglected areas, and ensure that the benefits of San Antonio’s growth are shared by all.
Mayor Nirenberg has made it clear that he trusts only those who have been part of his administration. But maybe it's time for someone who isn't entrenched in the status quo. Maybe it's time for a mayor who has a deep love for San Antonio and a bold vision for its future—a vision where no one is left behind and where all of San Antonio can benefit from the city's prosperity.
This is a pivotal moment for our city. I’m ready to bring the change that San Antonio desperately needs. The time for action is now. Let's make sure all of San Antonio can finally share in the promise of a brighter future.
