PROJECT MARVEL
A Smart Plan to Improve San Antonio—Without Raising Your Taxes
Note: As it currently stands, I am AGAINST Project Marvel.... but there are ways it can work. Please continue reading...
What’s the Goal?
If citizens vote to move forward with Project Marvel—which could be a big opportunity to boost San Antonio’s economy, create jobs, and improve our city—it must be done without putting the financial burden on you, the taxpayer*. Here's how we can make that happen using smart partnerships and creative funding options that give something back to the people of San Antonio.
1. Teaming Up with Private Businesses
We must work with private investors and companies to help fund the project. In exchange, they can make money through things like renting space, naming rights, or business operations tied to the project.
Why it’s good for you: No new taxes. The city shares costs with private businesses, lowering our spending.
2. Using Bonds Without Hitting Your Wallet
We can raise money by selling special bonds, which are paid back using the money the project earns (like fees, fares, or rent), not from your taxes. We’ll also set up funds to attract big investors who want to see their money grow.
Why it’s good for you: We raise money now but pay it back through the project itself—not your tax dollars.
3. Making Developers Chip In
New development means more city services are needed. So, we’ll charge developers fees to help pay for roads, pipes, and other essentials near the project.
Why it’s good for you: Developers help cover the costs—not you.
4. Letting Citizens Invest in the Project
We can explore letting local residents buy small shares in Project Marvel, giving you a chance to own a piece of the project and earn from it over time—like how Green Bay Packers fans own part of the team.
Why it’s good for you: You can invest in your city and possibly earn a return.
5. Boosting Local Businesses
*If any taxpayer money is spent on this project, we must have a Return on Investment (R.O.I.) whereby some of the money will go toward helping small and minority-owned businesses through:
• Interest-free loans
• Business grants
• Tax breaks for hiring locals
Why it’s good for you: More local jobs and thriving businesses in your community.
6. Job Training & Education
We can also negotiate using revenue from Project Marvel to help residents get the training and education they need to fill new jobs that come from this development.
Why it’s good for you: Better jobs, better pay, and more opportunities for you and your family.
The Bottom Line
San Antonio could possibly move forward with big projects like Project Marvel if it benefits the city, without hurting the citizens—without making you pay more in taxes. Ultimately, by working smartly, partnering with the private sector, and giving back to the community, etc., we can build a stronger, better city that works for everyone.
